Hand Signal Bookmark

Do you use hand signals in your classroom? They can be a great way to minimize interruptions in your classroom. This hand signal bookmark is perfect for students who need a little extra visual support.

Hand Signals

I didn’t use hand signals in my first year of teaching and I was overwhelmed with the constant bathroom requests! We all know how it goes, one student asks to go, and then suddenly 5 more need to go as well.

When I came across the idea of using hand signals I thought it was genius! I trained my students on how to use them during the first couple of weeks of school. I couldn’t believe how well it worked and how few interruptions I received.

I also had to train them on what my non-verbal cues were – shaking my head yes or no, or giving them the “in a little bit” signal.

Funny story – one of my students would always hold up the number 2 and when I nodded my head yes they would go to the bathroom. I asked them about it and they said it was because they needed to go #2 in the bathroom! LOL

Non-Verbal Assistance

Kindergarten students need non-verbal visual help all over the classroom. Things like the classroom schedule, center display, and a classroom jobs list all assist students with staying on track and following the routines of the classroom.

Adding visual directions to your lessons can be extremely helpful as well! Check out the resources below if you are in need of more visual cues for your classroom:

Teach these expectations and procedures during the first couple of weeks of school and you’ll be amazed at how independently your students do their work!

Check out my FREE first-week procedures checklist to help ensure you remember to teach all the important expectations!

Individual Assistance

Some students need a little extra reminder to use non-verbal cues. This is why I created these hand signal bookmarks.

Students can use them in their books. They can also keep them on their desks to help remind them not to interrupt. You can also read about how to create individual behavior plans to assist students who might need a little extra support.

These individual hand signal bookmarks are found in my CHAMPS behavior management resource. If you’d like a free copy of these bookmarks just fill out the info below:
